About Altieri:

Altieri Specialty Coffee is a family-owned operation in Boquete, Panama, perched on the eastern slopes of Volcán Barú at 1,600–2,200 masl. Founded by Eugene Altieri — an Italian-American entrepreneur known as "Don Gene" who moved to Panama in 1973 — the farm began almost by accident. Eugene purchased the land in Callejón Seco in 2005 as an investment with no prior coffee experience, only to discover its exceptional potential for specialty varieties. He sourced his original Geisha seeds from the Peterson family of Hacienda La Esmeralda — the very farm that put Geisha on the global map.

The farms sit in a rare microclimate where Pacific and Atlantic winds collide over volcanic soil, surrounded by the virgin cloud forests of the Barú National Park. The estate is divided into 11 distinct plots (tablons), each named after Eugene's grandchildren — this DILGO lot comes from the plot named after his grandson Diego, home to the farm's oldest Geisha trees planted in 2007. Now in its second generation, the operation is run by Eugene's children Anna Lynn and Francisco, alongside farm manager Roger Pitti. Altieri has earned four Best of Panama competition placements since 2014, and the family's meticulous approach — including 11 to 15 picking passes per harvest and hand-sorting every cherry — reflects a standard of care that borders on obsessive.

Why We Sourced This Coffee:

When it comes to Panamanian Geisha, provenance matters — and it doesn't get much more direct than seeds sourced from La Esmeralda, grown on volcanic slopes in one of Boquete's most prized microclimates. This DILGO lot comes from the farm's oldest Geisha trees, and the maturity shows in the cup: orange blossom, bergamot, pineapple, and tangerine — an intensely aromatic, elegantly structured profile that's quintessential high-altitude Panamanian Geisha at its finest.
The clean washed process strips away any distraction, letting the variety and terroir speak with absolute clarity. At an Agtron of #93, this is a light roast designed for filter brewing — delicate enough to preserve every floral nuance while maintaining a sweetness and body that carry through the cup. The Altieri family's competition pedigree and generational commitment to excellence gave us full confidence in this lot. This is a showcase coffee, and it delivers exactly that.
