About La Guadua:
La Guadua is a 12-hectare estate in the village of Buenos Aires, San Pedro de Cartago, in Colombia's Nariño department, sitting at 2,100+ masl. Named after the abundant guadua bamboo that grows across the land, the farm is home to approximately 40,000 trees spanning varieties like Geisha, Typica, Yellow Bourbon, Pink Bourbon, Maragogype, and Laurina.
Producer Jimmy is a second-generation coffee grower who began farming in 2005 and made a pivotal shift toward specialty coffee in 2016, when he started working as a quality analyst and cupper at a family cooperative in Buesaco. That experience gave him a trained palate and a deep understanding of what makes exceptional coffee — knowledge he brought back to his own farm when he launched independent production in 2020. Today, La Guadua's focus is on pushing sensory boundaries through innovative post-harvest processing and deliberate variety selection. The farm's competition track record speaks to the quality: a top-30 finish in Colombia's Cup of Excellence in 2018, and second place in the Copa de Mi Nariño regional competition in 2023 — with a washed Geisha lot.
Why We Sourced This Coffee:
Jimmy's trajectory from cupper to producer is rare, and it shows in the cup. His trained palate directly informs how he grows, picks, and processes his coffee — every decision is made with flavor clarity in mind. This washed Geisha Lot #1 is a perfect expression of that intentionality: bamboo, golden star fruit, honey, and rosemary — an unusual and captivating profile that reflects both the high-altitude Nariño terroir and Jimmy's precision at every stage.
At 2,100+ masl with Nariño's cool, cloudy climate, the cherries develop slowly and build remarkable complexity. The clean washed process lets the Geisha variety and terroir speak without distraction. Combined with Jimmy's competition pedigree and relentless pursuit of new sensory profiles, this lot stood out as a coffee that's as thoughtful as it is delicious.
Notes: Bamboo, Golden Star Fruit, Honey, Rosemary
